1 - PACIFICON - A FEW REFLECTIONS

PACIFICON 2000 is behind us!  There were many highlights.  Antenna seminars, QRP workshops, public and emergency service conferences, the parking lot swap meet, and of course (the best of all) making new acquaintances and renewing old friendships.

David Sumner, K1ZZ, ARRL Executive Vice President and Secretary, the “keynote” speaker gave a very interesting, informative, and entertaining presentation on “The Future of Amateur Radio”.  I mentioned to David afterwards that if I had had a printout of his speech, and a highlighter, the entire page would have been highlighted.

Here are just a few of his points that may be of interest to you (and may surprise you):

a) - In the years ahead, EMERGENCY (or auxiliary and public service communications) will be given the highest priority in the amateur service.

b) - Expect the over-all number of licensees in the FCC database to decrease.  This is due primarily to the fact that many of the “no-code” licensees (that started in 1991), have lost interest, and  are not expected to renew.

c - Use of the amateur bands for personal or family communication will decrease as a result of the popularity of other radio services better suited for this purpose.   (E.g. - FRS, GMRS,
MURS, etc.)

But the most inspiring part of Mr. Sumner’s talk was with regard to amateur radio education in public (and private) schools.  Here are a few points he made that I thought were very worthwhile.  To all of you who are involved (or are interested) in promoting amateur radio in the schools...read on.

a) - Amateur Radio can (and will) help teachers meet national standards in geography, language arts, mathematics, physics, and (of course) electronics.

b) - A MAJOR objective for us:  Ensure that kids have a POSITIVE experience with amateur radio.

c) - Outside funding will be necessary (Grants, etc.)

d) - Amateur radio is unlike the “competition”...(i.e. the “internet”), radio wave propagation is “a natural wonder”!

e) - Amateur Radio has always appealed to “bright” people of every generation.   It is an incubator for “inquiring minds”.

MANY THANKS TO:
Jim Maxwell, W6CF, Pac. Div. Director; Bob Vallio, W6RGG, Pac. Div. Vice Director;   the Mt. Diablo Amateur Radio Club; and all of the other hard working (and very dedicated) volunteers that helped make PACIFICON 2000 a success!

2 - MORE “S.E.T.”  BACKSCATTER”- Here is another report
From: Bill Pennington, WA6SLA, SV (South) SEC:

It was good to see the operation go as well as it did. Participation was OK and the traffic handling sounded fine. ( I know my own procedures were rusty and improvement is needed.)

Thanks to all who participated and next year will be better yet...

A special thanks to Dale/AD6CT and his wife Mary/KF6IZU ( both from Sac County ARES) for performing as NCS/relay on HF and NCS on VHF freqs...and excellent job.....

Another 'special thank you' to The Pioneer Network for the use of the 2m/440 system we used for the event....covered the area like a blanket...

Congrats to Van and his Plumas Co. ARES with the great participation from their end.

And to Todd/AC6CN and Zettz/AC6CO for helping out from East El Dorado County...thanks folks.

Yolo Co ARES was in it but had a hard time getting in the net...I know we'll hear more from them next time...

And thanks to Dave/K6SOJ SV (North) SEC who did the lion’s share of the section wide planning and operations on the whole exercise.

My own operation went well from my hunting camp located near the junction of SR 88 and the Mormon Immigrant Trail near the border of El Dorado and Amador Counties, at 6500 ft in the Sierra....

So that it would appear as a 'T' from overhead, I hung a G5RV (including the ladder feed line parallel to the ground) at .2 wave length at 40 meters (.1 wave length at 80 meters), went through a tuner and could copy all HF stations very well. (We - includes a friend from So Cal,
Tom/WB6HYH - also had a ball on all bands with a little DXing with the same antenna.)

Tnx rpt Bill.  How was the hunting? - de K6SOJ
