EMCOMM West 2003
EMCOMM West 2003 was held in Reno, NV, the fist time ever that
this event was held outside CA. EMCOMM Operators from Washington, Oregon,
California, Nevada and Arizona were present at this year's conference.
The conference was highlighted this year with a seminar on the
ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course (ARECC) presented by Dan
Miller, K3UFG from ARRL Headquarters in Newington, CT, the Course Manager.
Other presentations from served agencies, the Red Cross, the
Salvation Army and the National Weather Bureau were also given to the Hams in
attendance.
There was a special presentation by Bart Lee, KV6LEE who was at
the 9/11 disaster in New York City. He spoke about how the training for
emergencies and disasters and the fact that we, "don't rise to the occurrence
but rather sink to the level of our training."
Nevada State Army MARS also gave a recruitment presentation and
spoke on the value of MARS as as a resource in times of emergency.
Other activities at the conference this year were Mobile Unit
Displays and judging, VE Testing, ARECC Testing and RADIOGRAM/traffic handling
class presented by Ed Ewell, K7DXV, and Dave Thorne, K6SOJ. The winners of the
group and individual mobile units are pictured below.
Over 100 EMCOMM operators attended this one day conference and
plans are now underway for EMCOMM West 2004 to again be held in Reno. Watch this
