1 - ARES AND THE HOLIDAYS
The holiday season is upon us. A season of family, friends, feasting, celebration
and (for some) worship. And, many of us will increase our activity in the hobby
aspect of amateur
radio. The bands have been in good CX as we enter the winter DX season.
Hopefully, all of you antenna work is done for the year!
For those of us in the ARES, RACES, ACS, and other EMCOMM organizations we must not become
complacent. Winter storms can cause power outages, landline, microwave, satellite
and other normal communications can (and will) fail. Other disasters will occur that
will require our assistance. Do any of you remember the floods of January 1997?
We must remain vigilant and respond in an organized manner when activated. Please
remind every ARES member to keep there equipment ready and stay in close communication
with the EC or AEC. And PLEASE do not neglect your local and regional ARES nets,
thinking they can get along OK without me...so Ill just skip tonights
net. One absence is certainly understandable, especially in this busy
season; but one miss can easily turn in to three of four. (I am adding a complete
roster at the end of this letter).
In addition to being a regular on the ARES nets, winter is a good time to
spend some long evenings, cozy in your shack, working some exotic DX, enjoying a leisurely
ragchew, improving your CW and/or traffic handling skills, or enjoying
building a kit. A little SWLing is always enjoyable.
Ill be spending a lot of time in my RADIO ROOM this winter. Ahh...the
magic of radio! But, Ill be doing this with my batteries charged,
the fuel tank of the Land Cruiser will be full, the hubs locked, and my ready
kit...READY! - 73 es HAPPY HOLIDAY de K6SOJ

2 - BUTTE COUNTY SET REPORT
From Steve Kaps, N6NPN Butte County ARES AEC: This is my first attempt for
this type of report. HF is new for me for ARES work. (I thought all there was
is VHF.) But with life, there is lots to learn and I have a lot to
learn!
TNX 73
Steve N6NPN
(Editors note: Thanks Steve for your help with the EMSA Drill, and for filling
in for your EC who could not participate. Also, thanks for your excellent
report! If I could ask St. Nicholas for a Christmas present for the ARES ...it would
be to have all of our sections counties to participate at the level that your team
did during this exercise! Granted...we all have plenty to learn...the important
thing for all of us to remember is to continue to expand our knowledge and skills.)
Report on the Nov. 9 2000 EMSA Drill / S.E.T.
Steve Kaps, N6NPN, Butte County ARES AEC
In short we, as a group, need more training when acting in emergency situations. We need
some sort of a plan so we can contact people that are needed for the type situation that
we are facing. As AEC I have worked in two emergencies one was the Concow Fire
emergency. At first there was no one here, in Butte County ARES, to stay with the
Red Cross shelters. Being there, and having to deal with that problem I think the best
solution is to have someone on HF during the emergency. I think this will be in everyone's
best interest if
the HF (net) works during the emergency they would keep people ware of the emergency and
the severity of it. The HF can get the best-qualified person to do the job and get the
right information to the right people. I feel it is best that as ARES we need more
training to better understand the type of jobs that are needed for each kind of emergency.
This would help us in the knowledge on how to deal with them when they arise.
I will go on to the EMSA drill on Nov. 9

3 - SKYWARN NEWS
Jim Reynolds, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Medford NWS
Randy Miltier, K7RPM, SKYWARN Coordinator
Gary Pederson, N7GK, Asst. SKYWARN Coordinator
A SKYWARN Program is being developed for Southern Oregon and Northern
California. SKYWARN is the National Weather Service program of trained
volunteer spotters reporting
severe weather.
NWS WEATHER SPOTTER CLASSES:
NOTE: The Medford NWS office reports that classes will resume around April or May. Watch
this spot and/or check in to the ARES nets for updates and announcements.
WEEKLY SKYWARN NET:
Sundays at 1930L on the Mt. Ashland 147.26+ repeater (WX7MFR/R)
ALSO activated during severe weather events.
The NWS/Medford service area consists of nine counties: Coos, Curry, Douglas,
Klamath, Jackson, Josephine, Lake, (OR); Modoc and Siskiyou (CA). If you have any
questions concerning the ham radio part of the program, contact Randy/K7RPM < k7rpm@arrl.net > or,

--------------------------------------
ARESWARN INFORMATION:
REGIONAL ARES WEATHER AND ROAD NETS (WARNS) for SV Districts 1 and 2 are on
7232 LSB (daytime) and 3987 LSB (nighttime). Up/down QRM.
OREGON District 5, and ARES stations elsewhere, are CORDIALLY INVITED to
participate. During a SEVERE WEATHER EVENT, the HF WARN meets hourly AT THE BOTTOM
OF THE HOUR, until all information and traffic is passed, (more often as needed).
LOCAL ARES WARNS are activated by a local EC or AEC per your local plan. Check with your
EC for more information about your area. It is recommended that they meet at the TOP
OF EACH HOUR, and include a local HF - VHF station for relay / interface duty with the
regional net.
Check in to the JEFFERSON NOON NET daily at 1200L on 7232 // 3987 LSB for announcements
regarding anticipated severe WX.
