+++ SHORT CIRCUITS - (Brief, but important announcements)

+ EMCOMM 2002 UPDATES AND REMINDERS -

DEADLINE FOR B-B-Q TICKETS IS APRIL 1 -
If you plan to enjoy the Saturday night B-B-Q with us, and have not pre-paid for your tickets, the deadline is April 1. (More details below.)

DEADLINE FOR EMCOMM 2002 BASEBALL-STYLE CAPS IS ALSO APRIL 1 -
If you want to order a cap, payment must be made by April 1. (Additional details below.)

PRE-REGISTRATION -
There were a few who pre-registered...but for some reason the data did not
make it through “cyber-space”!  Please check the list at the end of this bulletin. If your call sign (non-hams are listed by name) is not on the list, please register again.  Thanks.

MOBILE COMM UNIT COMING FROM UTAH! -
(Details in the special EMCOMM 2002 section near end of this bulletin)

+ CAVEAT SURFIUM - “Let the surfer beware” -
(Excuse my Latin.)  Even though the ARRL “diamond” logo, and the acronym ARES are protected by law, it has come to our attention that a few unscrupulous persons, that are not associated with the ARRL/Amateur Radio Emergency Service, are using the term ARES illegally.  When you “surf” the internet, beware.  Not every site that calls itself an ARES site, is a legitimate ARES site.

+ WORLDRADIO -
A nice article titled: “Preparing for Future Terrorism” by Jerry Boyd, K6BZ, (SV Section Manager) appeared in the April 2002 issue of WORLDRADIO.

+ NEW GUEST BOOK -
At: www.emcomm.org

+ IS CW DEAD? -
Take a look at this site:
http://webhome.idirect.com/~jproc/radiostor/cwnded2.html
When you’re done...you can “click” on “Return to Radio Reading Room” at the bottom of the page for much more very worthwhile and interesting reading about our radio heritage.  Especially recommended are the RADIOGRAM, the TITANIC, the Amelia Erhart, and the five “Farewell/Final CW Message” pages. (Thanks to Ed Ewell, K7DXV, for this site reference.)

+ JOSEPHINE COUNTY ARES NET CHANGE -
Brian Fritsen, KK7BF, Josephine County EC, has announced that their weekly ARES net has been moved to THURSDAY nights at 2000L. Same frequency as before: 147.300+.  Following the ARES net will be NTS training.

+ KLAMATH COUNTY ARES NET CHANGE -
Terry Bell, N2RSI, Klamath County AEC, has announced that their weekly
ARES net has been moved to TUESDAY nights at 1930L.
Same frequency as before: 146.61-.

+ EMERGENCY EMAIL NETWORK -
For those who are not aware you can  “Get Notified of an Emergency by Email” from The Emergency Email Network, (a free service).  Info at: www.newsemergency.com/

+ THE TELEGRAPH OFFICE -
For any nostalgia buffs within our merry band: http://fohnix.metronet.com/~nmcewen/tel_off.html
Hint: Don’t visit this site unless you have plenty of time! And, take a look at “Origin of 73”...just to get you started. (Thanks to Ed Ewell, K7DXV for this “gem”.)

+ FEEDBACK -

FROM: Preston T. Brown, KG6FEY, (Copperopolis, CA)
“Attached is our check for EMCOMM 2002 and the B-B-Q dinner.  We are both
registered on your e-mail registration site.  I absolutely love your EMCOMM site and your 5-1-2+ Bulletins.  We will be at the Mountain Gate RV park in Redding during our stay.  Again...thanks and 73.”  Preston T. Brown, KG6FEY

COMMENT: Thanks for the kind words, Preston.  It’s comments like yours that
keep us all going!  And if we ever get time to visit, I sure would like to know the story behind the name of your town. - de K6SOJ

FROM: Lake “Ed” Trump, AL7N, (Fairbanks, Alaska)
“Thank you for the newsletter. EXCELLENT stuff on written message handling!
Especially the little quizzes on things wrong in messages...lots to be learned by all here...will pass this to my SEC/STM.”
73 Ed, AL7N, Fairbanks

COMMENTS: Thanks Ed. If others in "The Great Land" would like to receive the 5-1-2+ Bulletin direct, all I need is their name, call sign, and email address.  How is the ALASKA CW TRAFFIC NET (3535/7042 kHz) working out?  Especially the “24/7” part?  One of these days, I’ll blow the dust of my key and check in! - de K6SOJ

FROM: Ed Bruette, N7NVP, WWA SEC (Poulsbo, WA)
“You may want to modify your NVIS antenna page at: www.emcomm.org/svares/projects/nvis1.html) to indicate it is a 40 meter antenna resonant at about 7260 KHz.  A tuner is the only way to make it work on 75 meters.  I'll send the specs for a 75 meter. res. at about 3990 KHz once I build one.  We have computer modeled it but I want to see it work before putting out more information.”  73, Ed Bruette

COMMENT:  Thanks Ed.  The NVIS antenna by Dr. Carl O. Jelinek depicted on
the page you mention was derived from the U.S. Army AS-2259/GR NVIS
antenna.  View at: http://columbiaelectronics.com/as_2259_gr__portable__hf_antenna.htm . I believe the element dimensions were originally intended for military frequencies.  Dr. Jelinek does state that a ATU (tuner) must be used.  I have a modified version of this “spider antenna” under construction, and plan to cut two of the elements (¼ ~ each) for the 40 meter band, and cut the other two (90° from the others) or 80 meters.  One advantage of this configuration is that the antenna elements also serve as guy wires. However, just between you and me, I prefer a G5RV for quick deployment in the field.  (Of course an ATU is also required for the G5RV.) - de K6SOJ

MORE ABOUT NVIS ANTENNAS -
NOTE: For those who may not by familiar with the NVIS concept check:
http://www.emcomm.org/svares/projects/index.htm In the last 5-1-2+ Bulletin (#97) I (K6SOJ) wrote: “NVIS signals go ‘up and down’...out of deep valleys, over mountains, and into another valley, if necessary.  They are easily erected and may even be laid out on the ground, often with satisfactory results!”

FROM: Carter O’Brien, W6YJG, (Lake Shastina, CA)
(in part):  “...in order to resonate an antenna on the ground, it must be considerably shorter and pruned to local ground conditions; not something you would necessarily have in an emergency. If you put 100 Watts into a dummy load, chances are I could hear you. Putting an antenna on the ground is bad practice. The Army may find use in a ‘camo’ tactical situation, but not us.”

COMMENT: Thanks Carter.  Perhaps I should have said that a wire antenna laid out on the ground MAY work well enough to get the job done.  I readily admit that it is not the best way to go if you can at least get it up a few feet above the earth.  I never have actually tried to use an antenna laid on the earth. (Dr. Bill Wattenburg would say: “Have you done the experiment?”).  I have, however, laid a G5RV out across the sage brush (approximately 1-2 feet above the earth) with good results.  In reality, and for safety reasons, I suggest that antennas should be at least above “head height”. - de K6SOJ

- ALL EMCOMM operators are invited to “practice” with us.  ARES leaders are
asked to encourage members on their teams to participate.
- Operators that do not have an HF station, can still practice.  All you
will need is an HF receiver.

A SPECIAL QSL CARD is available to operators who participate in any
Wednesday session and submit a copy of a correctly copied RADIOGRAM by
regular mail.  All radio amateurs (including “no code” Technicians) are
invited to listen in and submit an entry.  Here are the rules:

1. Listen on Wednesdays at 2000L on 3987 LSB (+ or -).

2. Copy at least one RADIOGRAM(s) (preamble, text, and signature).  Copy(s)
must be accurate and correct.  VERY minor (non-consequential) errors, MAY
be accepted.

3. Use an ARRL RADIOGRAM blank; (a “printer friendly” version is available
at: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/forms/radiogram2.pdf or, you may use a plain piece of paper.  However, your “copy” MUST be in ARRL RADIOGRAM format.

4. Send your completed RADIOGRAM(s) and a business-size (4 x 9.5”)
self-addressed stamped envelope (.34 cent stamp affixed) to:
D. W.. Thorne,  K6SOJ, P.O. Box 99, Macdoel, CA 96058.

5. Entries MUST be postmarked by the Monday that follows the practice
session, since the correct copy will be published in the 5-1-2+ Bulletin
the following Tuesday.

Stations SEND messages for two consecutive Wednesdays.  Then RECEIVE
messages for the following two Wednesdays.  If you want to “jump in with both feet”, and be a sending (then a receiving) station, please let us know.  Don’t let the fear of making a mistake hold you back.  In an emergency or disaster, operators who have not practiced this will have one a hell of a time if they ever need to send a message.  Learn how, or polish up your old skills, BEFORE an EMERGENCY occurs!

OK...who will be next?  We need a receiving station for April 10 and 17.
