+++ EMCOMM 2002
“The AFTERMATH”
(Part One) +++
by D. W. Thorne, K6SOJ
EMCOMM 2002 is now behind us! Thanks to all of you who helped during the
(eight month) period of preparation. The weather was beautiful! It
even rained, right on schedule at 10 PM Saturday night, when dozens of black
subterranean sprinkler heads magically popped up around the camping and special
event station! It was fun watching a few hardy souls running around in
various stages of (un)dress, placing inverted trash cans and other hastily
recruited objects, over the offending man-made geysers.
It is humanly impossible to spend much quality time at an event like this visiting with, or even saying hello, or “thanks for coming”, to everyone in attendance. But, it was great to see so many of you, and to the others...likewise.
During the week just before EMCOMM, one thought kept circling through my mind. “This is the last time I will ever do this!”. However, after a couple of good nights of solid rest, I feel energized. Therefore, if these old bones hold up, there will be an EMCOMM 2003. In fact, the long-range planning has already begun! As soon as “Fire Season 2002” is behind us, detailed planning will commence (allowing for a lull from mid-November until about mid-January). To the many of you who have offered to help next year...please keep in touch.
The next few issues of this bulletin will contain more detailed reports. 46 EMCOMM 2002 participants submitted post event evaluations. Next week we hope to have them summarized and will publish them. Also, pictures taken at EMCOMM 2002 are coming soon.
In the meantime, here is the:

competition and did not receive a dash plaque please contact K6SOJ.
The part of EMCOMM 2002 gained a lot of interest and attention! Next year
we may (underscore MAY), add a “Ready Kit” category to the competition...one
qualifying factor will be that it all must be “carry-able” by one person.
Stay tuned...
(NOTE: First place winners will not be eligible the following year...however, we
hope that they will come back for EMCOMM 2003, and participate in the
display...with their 2002 trophies!)

RADIOGRAM PRACTICE SESSION STATION SCHEDULE:
SEND RECEIVE

Apr. 24 KK7BF to be announced (any
takers?)
May 1 KK7BF
May 8
------------------------------------
Stations SEND messages for two consecutive Wednesdays. Then RECEIVE
messages for the following two Wednesdays. If you want to “jump in with
both feet”, and be a sending (then a receiving) station, please let us know.
Don’t let the fear of making a mistake hold you back. In an emergency or
disaster, operators who have not practiced this will have one a hell of a time
if they ever need to send a message. Learn how, or polish up your old
skills, BEFORE an EMERGENCY occurs!
OK...who will be next? We need a receiving station for April 10 and 17.
