+ “A GRAND ADVENTURE

- Ed Bruette, N7NVP, SEC, (WWA) and Asst. Washington State RACES Officer, will be one of a crew of four aboard the vessel ENDURANCE, a 44 ft. custom “Garden Trawler”; as it voyages from Long Beach, CA to Poulsbo (Seattle), WA during the last week of May and the first week in June. Ed, and fellow crew member Pete Riley, KC7NSH, will be QRV in their spare time (if any) on 40 M and the 20 M Mobile Maritime nets. They will also be on selected VHF and UHF coastal repeaters. VHF APRS will be operational as N7NVP-9 while at sea and within range of a relay station. You may track their progress via the Internet at: http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?n7nvp-9. Ed’s email is: ebruette@silverlink.net

COMMENT: Thanks Ed, for inviting us to join you on your “grand adventure” ....via amateur radio! Some of us will be listening for your call on the Jefferson Noon Net. (1200-1230L daily on 7232 LSB)

+ FIELD DAY IS JUNE 22-23, 2002 -
Review and become familiar with the 2002 rules. (May QST p. 108-109.)

ARES teams, ARRL affiliated clubs that are supportive of the ARES, plus other bona-fide EMCOMM groups, that are participating in FIELD DAY 2002 may have their announcement included each week in the 5-1-2+ Bulletin. Send your team’s name, a general description of the location of your FD site, and a person to contact for more information. To get started:

- The SOJOURNERS - (State of Jefferson Operators’ United Relay Network and Emergency Radio Society). Lake Juanita Group Camp, Goosenest RD, Klamath NF. Contact: David Bell, N2RSN, at: N2RSN@arrl.net.

+ “NEON GREEN” ARES T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE -

Shasta County ARES will be placing another order for their neon-green ARES
Emergency Communications shirts on Friday. The shirts are printed to order,
and this will probably be the last “pre-fire season” order.

Orders must be placed by midnight Thursday May 16th. These shirts are not
team personalized, and will turn heads at any incident. Shasta County clients have already learned to spot ARES members at incidents! Now is your chance to stand out in the crowd! Full details and On-line ordering is available at: http://www.scares.org/shirts.htm

+ EC CORNER -
It’s to “brag up” the Sacramento Valley ECs and AECs a bit! For the month
of April 2002 we had eleven counties submit FSD-212 reports. (NOTE: There
are 20 counties in the SV Section. Three do not have an EC or an ARES
unit...YET.) So...11 out of a possible 17 equals an average of .647!

For April 2002: ARES teams in Amador, Butte/Glenn, Lassen, Placer, Plumas,
Siskiyou/Modoc, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo County and Districts 1 and 2;
Reported an increase in the ARES membership of: + 31
Reported 15 regular nets, with 89 sessions, volunteer hours: 632
Reported 5 public service events with total volunteer hours: 523
Reported actual emergencies: 0 (We want that figure to be: ZERO!)
Total volunteer hours reported: 1,155.
And, this does NOT include the countless hours, from over 150 persons at
EMCOMM 2002. If that were included, increase the total by another
(estimated) 8,000 hours!

To all the ARES leaders and ARES team members in the SV Section:
WELL DONE! Now...let’s REALLY ROLL...

+ MORE FEEDBACK RE EMCOMM 2002 - or, “The Dog Ate My RADIOGRAM”

From Ed Ewell, K7DXV, ewell@cvc.net (Ed was the lead instructor of the
RADIOGRAM / traffic class at EMCOMM 2002.) He gave each participant a
“homework assignment” to originate a RADIOGRAM, and send it to him via the
NTS. So far, Ed has received only two (out of a possible 48).

Ed would like to hear from anyone (e-mail OK) who originated a message to
him. Let him know when you sent the message and the call sign of the station you passed it to.

If you took the class and haven’t sent a message, please do so if at all
possible. Ed’s address is:

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP NET - (Approximately 2000L on 3987 LSB + or -.)
- Test messages will be sent by volunteer operators.
- The RADIOGRAMS will be published in the following 5-1-2+ Bulletin, so
participants can check their copy for accuracy.
- You will need a supply of blank RADIOGRAMS. They are available from
league HQ; or, you can print them out from:
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/forms/RADIOGRM.pdf
- ALL EMCOMM operators are invited to “practice” with us. ARES leaders are
asked to encourage members on their teams to participate.
- Operators that do not have an HF station, can still practice. All you
will need is an HF receiver.
- Later on, we may also do some sessions on CW.
- Watch the 5-1-2+ Bulletin for more information.

RADIOGRAM “Q and A” -

Q: “In NTS traffic, if stating a time within the TEXT of a message, is the
designator L or Z counted as a separate word in the check? (L= Local
Z=Zulu).”

A: In radiotelephony, a time with a time zone indicator within the TEXT, is counted as one "word". E.G. - "1823Z" is one word, and on phone would be said: "FIGURES ONE EIGHT TWO THREE ZULU". Alternate: "MIXED GROUP ONE EIGHT TWO THREE ZULU". It is improper to say "time" before the figures since the receiving station would write down the word "time" which is not a part of the text. ("FIGURES" is a standard "pro word".) In formal traffic, when time is stated in the preamble, it should always be in ZULU (UTC). With the date adjusted accordingly.* In informal messages, or in the text of a formal message, use of the letter "L" (for local) is unclear. “Local” where? It could also be interpreted to indicate time zone "L" (which is out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean just west of 180° longitude). If a local time, or the time for another zone, is to be included within a text, the time zone indicated must be specified (e.g. - PDT). Example: "figures 1823PDT" (on phone said as: "FIGURES ONE EIGHT TWO THREE PAPA DELTA TANGO"). Of course in Morse this is all "academic" since everything is spelled out anyway.

* NOTE: In the U.S., and westerly to 180° longitude (the International Date
Line) any time after 0000Z is tomorrow's (UTC) date, until 2400 local.

(When composing a RADIOGRAM, pretend that you will be charged ONE DOLLAR for every “word”.)

“TRAFFIC HANDLING IS FUN AND REWARDING!”

ADDITIONAL (VERY) USEFUL information is available at:
http://www.remote.arrl.org/FandES/field/pscm/sec2-ch11.html
http://www.area-ham.org/tngdocs/ntsdocs/ntsman.htm

A SPECIAL QSL CARD is available to operators who participate in any
Wednesday session and submit a copy of a correctly copied RADIOGRAM by
regular mail. All radio amateurs (including “no code” Technicians) are
invited to listen in and submit an entry. Here are the rules:
1. Listen on Wednesdays at 2000L on 3987 LSB (+ or -).
2. Copy at least one RADIOGRAM(s) (preamble, text, and signature). Copy(s)
must be accurate and correct. VERY minor (non-consequential) errors, MAY
be accepted.
3. Use an ARRL RADIOGRAM blank; (a “printer friendly” version is available
at: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/forms/radiogram2.pdf
or, you may use a plain piece of paper. However, your “copy” MUST be in
ARRL RADIOGRAM format.
4. Send your completed RADIOGRAM(s) and a business-size (4 x 9.5”)
self-addressed stamped envelope (.34 cent stamp affixed) to:
D. W.. Thorne, K6SOJ, P.O. Box 99, Macdoel, CA 96058.
5. Entries MUST be postmarked by the Monday that follows the practice
session, since the correct copy will be published in the 5-1-2+ Bulletin
the following Tuesday.

Stations SEND messages for two consecutive Wednesdays. Then RECEIVE
messages for the following two Wednesdays. If you want to “jump in with both feet”, and be a sending (then a receiving) station, please let us know. Don’t let the fear of making a mistake hold you back. In an emergency or disaster, operators who have not practiced this will have one a hell of a time if they ever need to send a message. Learn how, or polish up your old skills, BEFORE an EMERGENCY occurs!

OK...who will be next? We need a receiving station for April 10 and 17.
