This is my first presentation in an on going series of items
that will pertain to training for the Emcomm radio operator. The mission
is to meet the goal of EMCOMM. That is, “to expand the reservoir of
trained operators, technicians and electronics experts”. (FCC Part

Let us start out by looking at our self to determine what kind of Ham radio
operator we are, and what kind of Ham operator do we want to become? In our
beginning the basic mode of communications was CW, and a bit later AM phone was
added, then enhanced to be SSB. These two modes of communications CW and SSB are
the most used of the ham community. Other modes of communications exist, however
I will cover mostly the basic modes.
To be a trained operator, we should be able to use the CW and SSB modes and send and receive messages. This is our purpose? This is what is necessary to retain our frequencies. All of us should be able to perform this task. Please do not think of CW or SSB operators as a special interest group as they are not. This is the foundation of Ham radio. Other groups use different modes of communications, but they are not the majority. I include VHF FM communications in the basic mode also, this is voice communications and is very important in emcomm.
Now I ask the readers of this presentation to make a choice. You know that differences between people cause conflict. If you want to be a trained operator, technician and electronics expert, then come along and let’s begin our mission. You must make a choice. If you do now want to take on this mission please do not, as you will be very frustrated. I will present how to learn CW, and learn traffic handling. Traffic handling will be in CW, SSB and VHF FM. I will show you where to learn net operations. I will talk about QRP operations, and portable field operations, antennas for portable operations. Emergency power sources will be covered also.
So this is our beginning, and we will have a lot of fun, and I
will suggest some on the air training. 73 Ed Ewell K7DXV
