43. Generators will run out of fuel; jerry cans of fuel must be obtained early to maintain generator powered lighting and communications.

COMMENT:  It is recommended that all EMCOMM operators and units keep a
reserve supply of both gasoline and diesel fuel SAFELY stored. In a disaster situation or power outage, most fuel suppliers will not be able to operate their pumps. And, for those of us with wells...this also means NO WATER. I keep at least one 5 gallon “gerry can” of both gasoline and diesel fuel safely stored, and use them up twice a year (end of summer and end of winter), and re-fill them or the next six months. In some locations, a 50 gallon drum may be appropriate.  I also keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher in our pump house, in my outdoor storage shed, and in my home, and in each vehicle. - de K6SOJ.
